To all Western States Dwarf Car Association club members....
This is a reminder that each club has the responsibility to make sure its members are in compliance with the rules at your weekly races. That way no one will travel hundreds of miles (or more) to a national only to be told they have to fix their car or not run at all. The beginning of the 2006 season started, for most of us, with the Mohave nationals. At the national there were 8 cars running with 1 or more safety rule violations. With this being the first race all cars were allowed to run, some with minor modifications. But these rule violations must be repaired as soon as possible and definitely by the next national. If you suspect your car may have a violation please ask your local tech inspector and if you still are unsure contact a WSDCA tech inspector before you make the long haul to a national.
The violations seen will be listed in order as they appear in the Western States Dwarf Car Association 2006 general rulebook
RULE 1 sect. B. All frames and roll cages must form the actual contour and dimensions of the finished body. Sheet metal outside skins must be secured no more than 12 inches between each attachment point located at the perimeter of each panel where it meets the frame or roll cage. Also any gap exceeding 3/8 inch must be covered with sheet metal, plug, or permanent sealant. We are starting to see larger gaps around seat belts and other items. RULE 1 sect. E. There must be a complete firewall front and rear separating engine and trunk area from manned compartments. Complete means no hole for the engine to stick thru. RULE 1 sect. F This rule is to clarify trunk area. Body must be skinned to match its type and none of these cars had a trunk area above the door line behind the driver. The trunk area is below the door line and behind the driver. RULE 1 sect. H Radiator or oil cooler should be mounted in the original or stock location, behind the grill, or it may be mounted in the trunk area. Radiators and oil coolers cannot be mounted in the manned compartments. RULE 9 sect. B All lower frame rails will be a minimum of 1x2 rectangular tubing. No square, round or oval tube in lower side frame rails. Lower frame rails run from extreme front to extreme rear. Lower frame rails run under the rear differential. RULE 10 sect. C Engine set back is the square of the motor may not extend more than 17 inches from center line of front axle. No part of the engine or transmission may be more than 21 inches set back as measured above. RULE 11 sect. I Trailing arms, located outside of the frame may not extend beyond the rear door post. This does not mean you can cover them up with sheet metal. The last safety issue is not in the rule book but was voted in by all of your club presidents or there acting official at the yearly WSDCA meeting. There is to be no holes, openings or screen in the rear compartments that could allow hot fluids to come out of the back of your car. The approved method is louvers so as to deflect the spray down or some kind of deflector permanently attached to the panel to deflect any spray down.
Please familiarize yourself with the 2006 general rule book before you buy a new car, build a new car or modify your existing car. This will help protect you from most problems that occur.
